Tiling is unforgiving work: mistakes are visible forever and expensive to undo. The parts that determine whether a job looks professional are the parts that happen before the tiles are visible — a properly levelled screed bed, correct setting-out so cut tiles fall in the least conspicuous places, and consistent spacing.

Typical jobs include tiling new floors and walls in bathrooms and kitchens, re-tiling over failed or hollow-sounding older work, laying porcelain and large-format tiles that need a flatter substrate than standard ceramic, skirting and step nosing, and outdoor tiling on balconies and car porches where slip resistance and drainage fall both matter.

Repairs are a category of their own: replacing a handful of cracked tiles without disturbing the surrounding field, and re-grouting bathrooms where the grout has stained or failed and water is getting behind the tiles.
