About carpentry work in Nigeria

Carpentry covers two fairly separate skill sets that are often searched for with the same word. Finishing carpentry is the fitted work inside a building — wardrobes, kitchen cabinets, TV units, doors, skirting and ceiling trims. Structural carpentry is roofing timber, formwork and framing during construction.

For fitted work, most jobs in Nigerian homes involve MDF, plywood or HDF with laminate or gloss finishes, and the quality difference between a good and poor job shows in the hardware and the edges: whether hinges are soft-close and properly aligned, whether edging is banded cleanly, and whether the carcass is square. Ask to see photographs of previous work — this is a trade where a portfolio tells you more than a description.

Repair work is also common: rehanging a door that no longer closes after the frame has shifted, replacing a warped wardrobe panel, fixing drawer runners, and rebuilding cabinet bases damaged by water under a sink.

Measurements are the usual source of disputes. Agree who is measuring, and confirm whether the quoted price includes materials, transport and installation. Carpenters listed here submitted their own details.
